What is encoding vs hashing?

Encoding (Base64, URL encoding) reversibly changes how data is represented so it can travel safely in URLs, headers or emails. Hashing is one-way: MD5 and SHA functions turn any input into a fixed-length fingerprint used to verify integrity. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security use — prefer SHA-256 or SHA-512.
