What is an SSL certificate?

An SSL/TLS certificate proves a server owns a domain and lets browsers encrypt the connection. It is issued by a certificate authority, covers the names listed in its SANs, and expires — usually after 90 days to a year. The chain links the site's certificate back to a trusted root through intermediate certificates.
